The opening match of the ICC World Cup 2011 featured co-hosts India and Bangladesh at a jam-packed Mirpur stadium in Dhaka. The last time these 2 teams met in a World Cup match was 4 years ago in 2007 World Cup, where Bangladesh scripted India’s early exit from the tournament by a stunning victory. If those harsh memories were still haunting the Indians at the start of the match, then Virender Sehwag and Virat Kohli put to rest all the concerns of a repeat of 2007, playing sensational knocks to take India to a daunting score of 370, which was always going to be out of reach. And the rest, as they say is history.

MS Dhoni , as is so often the case, lost the toss and Bangladesh decided to field first due to concerns regarding the dew at night. Any hopes of Bangladesh making early inroads into the strong Indian batting line-up were blown away by a solid fluent partnership between Sehwag and Sachin. When Sachin got run out at the score of 69 in 11 overs, the base was set for India. And more importantly, Sehwag had set his sights on a big one, always a danger sign for any opposition. India reached 152 in 23 overs when Gambhir got out. It was the moment when Virat Kohli joined Sehwag and the carnage started. The pair put on an astonishing partnership of 203 runs in just 24 overs, flaying the Bangladeshi bowling attack to all parts of the ground. While Sehwag made a blistering, yet mature and sensible 175 of just 140 balls, Virat Kohli continued his dream run with a wonderfully compiled century in his first ever World Cup match. Kohli stayed till the end unbeaten on 100 of 83 balls. India’s eventual total of 370 was the highest ever total at Mirpur and way beyond Bangladesh’s highest ever ODI score, which meant the game was all but sealed at the mid-innings break.

Though Bangladesh tried to make a match of it, it was always going to be a mountain too high to climb. Bangladesh were always behind the 8-ball and the asking rate kept escalating, leading to fall of wickets, which is inevitably the case while chasing such targets. Bangladesh, in the end managed 283/9 in 50 overs, giving India a 87 run victory to start their World Cup campaign in style. Apart from an erratic Sreesanth (53 runs of 5 overs), the bowling was pretty decent with Munaf Patel the pick of the bowlers taking 4 wickets for 48 runs.

Sehwag was the deserved Man-of-the-Match for his outstanding innings and he was frank as always at the presentation:

“It was a good start for the team, I have said this is a revenge game and we have won. I have said before Bangladesh are not good in Tests, but they can compete in ODIs, but today they could not. I was looking to bat long, maybe get a 100 in 30 overs and then go on. Special thanks to my physio for helping me, I was carrying a couple of injuries and they got me ready for this game. Well, the team – everyone did well, other than Sreesanth”.

Dhoni stressed on improving the fielding when asked about the performance at the presentation and lauded Sehwag and Kohli for holding the innings together and giving India the big total.

So, India gets 1 match out of the way. 8 of them remain for the summit. The next match is against England on 27th February at Bangalore. Lets hope India put up a similar performance….
