Australian Open 2011 Update: Djokovic demolishes Murray, wins title

The showpiece event of the first Grand Slam of the year, i.e the Men’s Singles final between Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray turned out to be a one-sided affair as Djokovic was almost flawless in his crushing straight sets 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 victory. Djokovic dominated from start to finish to secure his second Australian Open title in 2 and half hours of tennis. Djokovic’s consistent, powerful base-line game left Murray bemused, frustrated and helpless at times and as the match went on, the frustration resulted in more and more unforced errors from his raquet. The match ended with Murray winning only 78 points as compared to 106 by Djokovic, clearly telling the story of the match. After a tight few opening games of the first set, Djokovic was simply unstoppable and irresistible as he stepped up a gear when it really mattered.

Djokovic has been on a roll since reaching US Open finals in September as he helped Serbia to win its first ever Davis Cup title, before coming to the Australian Open, beating the defending champion Roger Federer in the semi-finals and then crushing Murray in the final. Murray has to wait for some other day, before he wins his first Grand Slam title as he lost his 3rd Grand Slam final.

Djokovic was quite conserved in his celebrations after winning the championship, probably due to the great friendship that he shares with Murray and understanding how Murray would have felt.

Djokovic said the following after the match:

“This is for my country. We know each other for such a long time and it was really difficult to play against you tonight. Hopefully you will have another chance to win a Grand Slam title, with your talent you will.”

Murray said:

“I’ll try to keep it together this year. Hopefully, I’ll come back and have more chances in the future.”

Hence, this finishes the first Grand Slam of year 2011. And I can safely say that Australian Open 2011 had it all. From Some sensational tennis action, Clijsters winning the title for the first time, beating Li Na, who became first Chinese player to reach thus far, a Grand Slam final without Nadal or Federer for the first time since Australian Open 2008, Djokovic and Murray (2 rising stars) facing each other in the final, Paes-Bhupathi putting up a brilliant performance on coming back together in a Grand Slam after 9 years, losing only in the finals to top seeds Bryan brothers and much more, it was definitely a fabulous tournament…
