Definition of Mystery Shopping

Mystery shopping is a tool or strategy used by market research companies or companies specializing in Mystery Shopping. Mystery shopping is extremely helpful in gauging the quality of retail service or gather specific information about products and services. Newly launched retail outlets use mystery shopping to make sure they are able to provide the user experience of desired level.

Mystery shopping can be applied or used in any industry. The most common venues for mystery shopping could include, retail stores, hotels, movie theaters, restaurants, food outlets, banks, gas/petrol pumps, auto dealerships, and health clubs/health care facilities. 

Definition of Mystery Shopper or Mystery Consumer

Mystery shopper or mystery consumer is a person hired by a market research or mystery shopping company or even by the manufacturer itself to visit retail stores, posing as a casual shopper. The main aim to hire a mystery consumer is to collect information about the stores’ display, prices, and quality of their sales staff, etc.

Mystery shoppers are asked to perform certain routine consumung tasks including, purchasing, questioning, registering complaints, etc. When the mystery shopper provides the report or feedback of his/her experience, the hiring company pays all the bills and certain amount of taking up the task.
