Saina Nehwal wins Hong Kong Open Super Series title

The Indian badminton sensation, Saina Nehwal has added another trophy to her fast increasing cabinet by winning the Hong Kong Super Series title, beating the Asian Games champion Shixian Wang (China) in a thrilling 3 game battle. Saina came back from 1 game down to clinch the win in 1 hour and 11 minutes of scintillating and gripping badminton. This is Saina’s 3rd Super Series title of the year (Singapore and Indonesia being the other 2), which is SOME achievement. Apart from this, Saina has also won Indian Open Grand Prix and Commonwealth Games Gold medal in this year. This is just the perfect way to end a tremendous year, after a little hiccup at the Asian Games, where Saina couldn’t perform up to her potential.

After losing the first game 15-21, Saina changed tactics and went for fast paced rallies and powerful smashes to counter the opponent and managed to claw her way back into the match, winning the second game 21-16. The game 3 was a very tight affair, with some real high quality badminton on display from both players. Eventually, Saina held her nerve at the critical moments and took the match a precise, accurate deadly smash, before throwing her racquet in celebration.

Saina had dropped to World No 4 in rankings after the Asia Cup, but this win would move her closer to her dream of becoming the World No 1 in near future.

Saina was understandably ecstatic after the great victory and said:

“It is like a dream come true. I am very happy that I am finishing the year like this. I was very, very confident throughout. I was always confident after the second game. Winning this match was very important for me. I am really happy.”

Let us just hope Saina Nehwal fulfills her dream of becoming World No 1 and keep making India proud  with wonderful performances like this in times to come…
