Bangladesh clean sweep New Zealand 4-0, create history

No, I have not made any mistake in writing the title. No, this is not my imagination. This is something which has actually happened. The traditional whipping boys in Cricket have created history by completing their first ever clean sweep against a top-flight opposition in New Zealand. For a team accustomed to be clean swept themselves and considered as pushovers, an easy opposition to try out the youngsters, an opposition to score records against, to get back into form and so on, this clean sweep by Bangladesh is nothing short of a revelation and a moment to savor. For New Zealand, it was a series to forget as they were outclassed in all departments of the Game and no matter how much one can go on praising Bangladesh, the fact remains that New Zealand were quite pathetic.

It was a series where the term ‘Leading from the Front’ got its due thanks to Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan. He was just head and shoulders above the rest, be it in bowling or batting. He scored 213 runs at average of 71 with one century and one half century, and also took at average of 15.9. No other player was even close to his stats in batting or bowling. Also, Shakib Al Hasan used himself and other spinners so effectively that New Zealand had no clue what to do. They were tied in knots and also lost wickets sometimes to clever bowling and sometimes in frustration.

In the last ODI, when New Zealand were trying to salvage some pride, Bangladesh found a new hero in medium pacer Rubel Hossain who took 4 wickets for 25 runs, which helped the hosts defend 174 successfully. The valiant effort of the lower order was not good enough as New Zealand went down by 3 runs to spark off wild celebrations at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.

New Zealand came into the series thinking of getting some practice in sub-continent conditions before a tough tour of India, which begins in November. At the end of the series, they have more questions than answers as to what their best combination should be against a red hot and in form Team India. New Zealand have also dropped to a lowly 7th position in ICC ODI Rankings, now just ahead of West Indies and Bangladesh among the test playing nations. Bangladesh have closed in on the heels of West Indies and a good result against Zimbabwe in their next series may very well catapult them to 8th position.

As of now, it is time for Bangladesh to celebrate their success. Let us hope Bangladesh can repeat such performances in times to come and compete with the best on a more consistent basis…
