The 19th Commonwealth Games to be held at Delhi from 3rd to 14th October 2010 have been in the news, almost every time for the wrong reasons over the past 2-3 months. From corruption charges, shoddy lackluster preparations, sub-standard facilities and stadia and so on, these Commonwealth Games have already been a story even before they have begun. But the moment of truth has finally arrived and all eyes will now shift to the actual action as the athletes take the centre stage. It will also be found out whether the Games, after all the last-ditch effort have been rescued or not and whether the athletes and the dignitaries give a thumbs-up to the overall arrangements.

If the initial reactions are anything to go by, then it seems that the facilities have been made up to the mark and the teams from different countries have showed satisfaction thus far. It is also a fact that there will be a participation of 6,800 athletes and team officials from 71 nations and territories, making it the biggest ever Commonwealth Games. Ofcourse, the real test would be the conducting of various events at different stadia and all the arrangements from in and around the Games Village, the spectator experience and comfort and the various complexities which arise naturally in hosting such an event.

The Games will kick off with the Opening Ceremony at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium at 7pm tomorrow night, while the events begin from Monday. There will be as many as 17 different events which are as follows:

  • Aquatics
  • Archery
  • Athletics
  • Badminton
  • Boxing
  • Cycling
  • Gymnastics
  • Hockey
  • Lawn Bowls
  • Netball
  • Rugby Sevens
  • Shooting
  • Squash
  • Table Tennis
  • Tennis
  • Weightlifting
  • Wrestling

Though, many of the big stars like Usain Bolt, Asafa Powell and so on have pulled out of the Games citing injury or security reasons, there is still enough talent on board to give us a spectacle. India would try their best to better their last Commonwealth Games performance in 2006 where they finished 4th behind Australia, England and Canada, bagging 22 Gold, 17 Silver and 11 Bronze medals.

We would all wish for a fantastic Commonwealth Games 2010. But one must also not forget all the financial irregularities and corruption charges against the various people involved with the Games. All those guilty must be put to sword to ensure that in future,  it will not be a case of last-gasp rescue operation which will save us from embarrassment. For the moment, let us wish that everything goes well over the next 15 days and the 19th Commonwealth Games are a Success…
