India v/s Australia test series: a preview

India v/s Australia has grown into an intriguing rivalry over the last 15 years ever since the Border-Gavaskar trophy was introduced in 1996. India have a slight upper hand, leading the series 4-3, though all India’s series wins have come at home, while Australia have also won once in India. The 2 test match series starting tomorrow is once again expected to be a fiercely contested one between two of the giants of Cricket.

This series is slightly different in the sense that India would start as favorites being the No 1 team in the world and also playing at home, while Australia have slipped down to 4th position in ICC Test Rankings, something they are not at all used to. No matter what the series result is, India would retain their No 1 position, while a series win for Australia would catapult them to 3rd position. Having said that, do not expect India to give an inch to Australia as apart from the rankings, there is a lot of pride at stake. A lot of critics have questioned India’s rise to No 1 position and India would have to continue winning to prove that they deserve to be where they are.

Amidst all the controversy and cynicism surrounding the game over the past month or so, it is time to set things right and enjoy this thrilling series. It looks as if both teams have a stronger batting line-up as compared to their bowling attacks, which may mean the bowlers have to be at the top of their game to force a result by taking 20 wickets. The test matches are at Mohali and Bangalore, which are both good sporting wickets generally and this means everyone would have something in the pitch to take advantage of, in both matches.

2 teams with little to choose between them on paper means that the series may well be decided by some individual brilliance like a special innings by a batsman or a magical spell by a bowler. This is also due to the fact that it is a very short series, just 2 matches. India’s rise to the top of the rankings has got a lot to do with Virender Sehwag at the top of the order. He has set up so many matches for India with his exhilarating batting performances, which have not only put the oppositions on the back foot right at the start, but also demoralized them and broken their belief. If Sehwag gets going in this short series, then India would be extremely difficult to beat. On the other hand, if Australia can dismiss Sehwag cheaply, they would feel that they can have measure of control over Indian batting. Make no mistake, Sehwag is the crucial weapon India possesses and may very well have a decisive say in the outcome of the series.

It remains to be seen whether the series can live up to its billing, but one thing is certain that this is not going to be a dull series by any stretch of the imagination. So just sit back and enjoy this great rivalry…
