US Open

Source: buzzstation.net

Since my last update, the 2 days of action since has again thrown up some surprising results, some sterling performances, some failing seeds and some new potential stars. Let us have a look at some key results:

Men’s Singles:

Roger, the great Federer was in no mood to spend too much time in scorching New York heat and dismissed Germany’s unseeded Andreas Beck 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 in just an hour and 41 minutes to advance to Round 3. Similarly, Novak Djokovic had a comfortable Round 2 win against Philip Petzschner in straight sets. On the other hand, Rafael Nadal, world no 1, gunning for his first US Open title, had to dig deep and show all his fighting spirit to beat Denis Istomin 6-2, 7-6, 7-5 in Round 2. At one stage, Istomin was 5-1 up in the 2nd set tie-break, when Nadal fought hard and won the set. The 5th seed Robin Soderling also made it through to Round 3 easily.

American Challenge:

After the exit of Andy Roddick, the other American hopefuls John Isner (18), Mardy Fish (19), Sam Querry (20) and James Blake all made it through to Round 3.

Upsets:

The no 6 seed Nikolay Davydenko was shown the exit door by Richard Gasquet in Round 2, losing In straight sets. Also, no 11 seed Marin Cilic lost a marathon battle against Japanese Nishikori in a 5 set battle.

Women’s Singles:

The top seed Caroline Wozniacki had a ‘Perfect Win’ in Round 2 against Kai-Chen Chang, winning without losing a game 6-0, 6-0 in just 47 minutes of tennis. Similarly, the other big contenders for the title Kim Clijsters (2) and Venus Williams (3) made light work of their opponents as they stormed into the Round of 16, winning their Round 3 matches. Samantha Stosur (5) and Dementieva (12) also progressed to Round of 16. On the other hand, Maria Sharapova (14), Vera Zvonareva (7), Kuznetsova (11), Jankovic (4) will all play their Round 3 matches today, along with Wozniacki.

American Challenge:

While Venus Williams is one of the Americans in the Round of 16, Beatrice Capra will have her chance to do the same today, after she beat no 18 seed Aravane Rezai in Round 2. But, Capra will have it tough against Maria Sharapova, who has shown some good form so far. So, realistically, America’s only hope is Venus Williams.

Upsets:

There were no major upsets as pretty much all the top contenders are still fighting it out for the title.

Indian Challenge:

The Indo-Pak pairing of Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi made it through to Round 3, winning their Round 2 match in straight sets. The pair of Mahesh Bhupathi and Max Mirnyi will play their Round 2 match today. In Women’s Doubles, Sania Mirza and her Russian partner crashed out in Round 1. In Mixed Doubles, the no 2 seeds Leander Paes and Cara Black have reached Round 2.

Matches to Watch out for Today:

Roger Federer (2) v/s Paul-Henri Mathieu

James Blakes v/s Novak Djokovic (3)

Maria Sharapova (14) v/s Beatrice Capra

Svetlana Kuznetsova (11) v/s Maria Kirilenko (23)

(All are Round 3 matches)
