Perhaps you would be wondering why I used finally and what’s such a big deal beating Australia in 1 test match. Well, for Pakistan, it is something really big. It is because the last time they managed to get the better of Australians in a test match was when some of us were small kids, way back in 1995 at Sydney.  It had been one-way traffic ever since as Aussies battered, bruised, embarrassed and humiliated every Pakistan team which came their way. Just have a look at the extraordinary run of results for Pakistan after the win at Sydney:  Lost, Drawn , Drawn, Lost, Lost, Lost, Lost, Lost, Lost, Lost, Lost, Lost, Lost, Lost, Lost, Lost. This winning streak of 13 on the trot is a world record for any team against a particular opponent. No wonder, all those who bet on Pakistan in this match would have made massive fortunes today. Pakistan, at last, broke the jinx, winning by 3 wickets at Headingley, Leeds (neutral venue) to square the 2 match series 1-1.

The match was almost an action replay of the one at Sydney 6 months ago: Australia won the toss, decided to bat first on a dicey wicket, the decision backfired as Pakistan pacemen dismissed Australia for a paltry total (127 then and 88 now), Pakistan took big first innings lead (206 then and 170 now), Australia fought back in the second innings, with the tail making serious contributions (381 then and 349 now), thereby setting a target which was not imposing by any stretch of the imagination, but nonetheless a decent one (176 then and 180 now). Luckily, for Pakistan, the similarity ended there and Pakistan scraped past the target this time, of which they fell short by 36 runs then.

Ironically, this victory has come at a time after the original captain for the tour; Shahid Afridi decided to retire after defeat in first test and it looked nearly impossible to salvage even a draw from this match. But, then, Pakistan are not tagged the most unpredictable side for nothing. They exemplified the fact once again.

The pick of the Pakistan players was once again the left arm paceman Mohammad Aamer, who is definitely a rising star in world cricket. Pakistan have a tradition of unearthing fast bowling talent and they have found another gem. His pace, aggression, nagging line, length and movement has drawn praise from the legend Wasim Akram too, who has tipped him to be a sensation.

With the 1-1 result in the series, Australia, the higher ranked team at start of series will lose some rating points while Pakistan will gain some. Looking ahead, Australia’s next assignment is tour of India (2 test matches and 3 ODI’s starting October 1st with first test. On the other hand, Pakistan would stay in England for 4 test matches, 2 T20’s and 5 ODI’s starting with first test from 29th July and going all the way till 22nd September for the 5th ODI.
